Teaching won't start

The usual reasons: not enough battery, something locked, a missing yes from a parent, or teaching left half done.

If teaching will not start, the screen usually says why.

"Pip is sleeping" or "Not enough battery for this one"

Teaching needs a little battery to start. If there is less than that, it waits. Practice, missions and the Room still work. See When the battery is empty.

"A grown-up can unlock this one"

Free includes the first skills. The others need Core, so they show this line and a button that says "Ask a grown-up." It opens the plans page after the phone check. See Free and Core.

"A grown-up needs to say yes first"

For a child under 13, a parent has to say yes before the companion can work with them. See A parent says yes first.

"You already started this. Want to continue?"

This is not an error. Teaching was left half done. Continue picks up where your child left off, and Restart begins again.

A message that a skill is not ready or cannot be found

That skill is not available to open right now. Go back and pick another, or try again later. If it keeps happening, see I see a "Try again" message.
