The phone check

Before the grown-up areas open, Dilly asks the phone for Face ID, Touch ID, the passcode, or a number puzzle.

Some screens are only for grown-ups. Before they open, Dilly runs a check on the phone. It keeps a child who picked up the phone out of those screens.

Which screens

  • The Parent/Teacher area
  • The plans page, and canceling or managing a plan
  • The learning report
  • The Companion page in the Parent/Teacher area

What the check looks like

  • Face ID or Touch ID. If your phone has one set up, Dilly asks the phone straight away.
  • The passcode. If the phone only has a passcode, a card says "Grown-ups only" with three buttons: Use Face ID or passcode, Use a puzzle instead and Not now.
  • A number puzzle. If the phone has neither, or you pick the puzzle, the screen says "Type this number in words." You type a number such as 214 as words.

If the check fails or you cancel, a calm card offers Try again, Use a puzzle instead and Not now.

How long it lasts

After you pass, you can move between the grown-up screens without being asked again for a short while. It closes sooner if the app has been in the background for a while, or if you switch children or log out.

What still needs your password

Some things need your account password typed again, even after the phone check:

  • Adding or changing a child
  • Saying yes for a child under 13
  • Deleting a profile
  • Inviting another parent

Honest limits

This is a check on the phone, not a lock on the account. It keeps a child who picked up the phone out of the paywall and the grown-up screens. A child who knows the phone's passcode could pass it. Stripe's payment page still asks for card details or Apple Pay before any money moves.
