These twelve skills are about checking. Each name is the label on the puzzle piece.

  • Spot what doesn't add up. Notice when an answer does not add up.
  • Use your facts. Use the facts you give.
  • Show the proof fact. Show which fact supports an answer.
  • Say when unsure. Say when it does not know enough.
  • Facts or guesses. Tell facts from guesses.
  • Check claims. Check whether a claim matches the evidence.
  • Clue or proof. Tell a clue from proof.
  • Sure is not always right. Notice when a sure answer might be wrong.
  • More than one explanation. Think of more than one reason.
  • Don't overclaim. Wait for more examples before a big claim.
  • Shorten, keep meaning. Shorten information without losing what matters.
  • Spot persuasion. Notice when a message is trying to push you.

Many lessons use made-up characters and places. See Where do the facts come from, and are they checked?
