Why does my child tap choices instead of typing?

Teaching and building use prepared choices, so nothing personal gets typed. Missions have a few writing steps.

Your child taps prepared choices when teaching a companion, building in the Workshop, and playing side missions. There is no typing in those places.

Your child taps a prepared choice and presses Send. There is nothing to type.

Why

Prepared choices let Dilly check every answer. They also mean there is no box where a child could type a name, a phone number or an address.

There is no AI in Dilly. Everything your child sees was written in advance, and nothing your child types is sent to an AI service.

Where your child does write

  • The last step of a mission. Every mission ends with a short writing step in your child's own words.
  • A nickname for the companion. It is optional, and Dilly turns away some words.

What your child writes is part of what Dilly keeps. See What Dilly keeps.

Younger readers

Not typing helps young readers too. They can tap along with a grown-up beside them. See Does Dilly read out loud?
