What can the companion do, and what can't it do?

The companion can do only what your child taught it. It cannot chat, answer new questions or speak.

What it can do

  • Say hello and start a lesson by saying what it wants to learn.
  • Do each thing your child taught it, and only those things.
  • Take part in builds in the Workshop, using the pieces your child earned.
  • Show how it feels. It gets sleepy when the battery is low, and falls asleep when it runs out.
  • Live in the Room that your child decorates.

What it cannot do

  • Chat. Your child cannot type to it or ask it anything. There is no chatbot.
  • Answer new questions. Its words were written in advance.
  • Use a skill it was not taught. A new companion starts with no abilities. Pieces your child has not earned do not fit on the board.
  • Speak or listen. There is no voice. See Does Dilly read out loud?
  • Look things up. It does not use the internet to find answers.
  • Make your child feel bad. An empty battery is a rest. The app does not call it an error.
A blue piece is a skill Pip has. The four dots fill as your child practices it again.

Why it is built this way

So the story is true to what the app is. Your child taught it. See What your companion knows.
